The roofer's playbook
Eight things you can do this week to win more jobs from Google, whether or not you ever work with us. Every number links to where it came from.
01
Answer every call (or let something else)
The cheapest job you'll ever get is the one already calling you. The night after a hailstorm, the roofer who picks up gets the inspection.
1 in 3callers to home service businesses never reach a person, even when they stay on the lineInvoca, 2026
55%of home service businesses never ask the caller to book, even when someone answersInvoca, 2026
Have a storm-day plan. When hail hits, calls come in all at once. Line up overflow help, an answering service, or online inspection booking before storm season.
Text back every missed call within a minute. Most business phone apps can do it automatically. It keeps the homeowner from calling the next roofer, or opening the door to a stranger.
Let people book inspections online. A booking link on your website catches the “roof leaking what to do” search at 11pm.
Ask for the inspection before you hang up. Use the script below, in your own words.
Hi, this is {Your Business}. Sorry we missed your call, we're out on roofs today. Reply with what's going on and we'll call you back within the hour. If water is coming in, move valuables away from the leak and take photos for your insurance.
End-of-call script
We can come out tomorrow between 9am and 11am for a free inspection. We'll take photos of everything, so you have them for your insurance company either way. Want me to put you down for that?
Your Google Business Profile is what shows up on Google Maps. After a storm, it's often the first thing a homeowner checks.
Primary category: Roofing contractor. Google says to pick the most specific category that fits your main business.
Add a few more categories, only for work you really do. Common ones: Gutter cleaning service, Siding contractor, Skylight contractor. Google warns against adding a category for every service.
List your services one by one, with a sentence each: roof repair, storm and hail damage, roof replacement, emergency tarping, gutters, inspections.
Show you're local and legit. A real address or service area, your license number and years in business in the description. People literally search “roofing contractor license lookup.”
Real photos, added every month. Before-and-after roofs, your crew, your trucks. Nothing builds trust like finished work on a house that looks like theirs.
Hours that match reality. If you do emergency tarping, say so. “Emergency roof tarping near me” is a common search.
Reviews decide who gets the call. For roofers, they're also how homeowners tell you apart from a storm chaser.
68%of customers will only hire a business rated 4 stars or higher, up from 55% a year earlierBrightLocal, 2026
80%of customers say they're likely to choose a business that replies to every reviewBrightLocal, 2026
50%of customers are less likely to choose a business that posts generic, copy-paste repliesBrightLocal, 2026
Ask when the job is done and the yard is clean. A text with a direct link works best.
Make it one tap. In your Google profile, use “Ask for reviews” to get a short link straight to your review form.
Ask customers to mention the details, like the town and whether you helped with insurance. Those are exactly the reviews the next homeowner is looking for.
Reply to every review within a week, good and bad, in your own words, and sign it.

Example answer you can adapt
Shingles blew off my roof. Will it leak?
Maybe not right away, but it's a real risk. Missing shingles leave the layer underneath exposed, and the next heavy rain can find its way through. Take photos from the ground, check your ceilings and attic for water spots, and don't climb up yourself. Call us for a free inspection. We'll photograph the damage so you have it for your insurance company, and we can tarp it the same day if needed.
Put a short answer on the page, then a clear “Call us” or “Book an inspection” button right under it.
Wind and hail cause more homeowners insurance losses than anything else. After every storm, out-of-town crews knock on doors, and homeowners get suspicious of everyone. Make it obvious you're the real local roofer.
42.5%of what home insurers paid out in 2023 went to wind and hail damage, more than any other causeInsurance Information Institute
Publish the FTC's own checklist, and check every box. The FTC tells homeowners to hire only licensed and insured contractors, verify the license with the state or county, get a written contract, never pay cash, and pay in full only when the job is done. Put your license number, proof of insurance, and payment terms right on your site.
Say what you won't do. “We never ask for full payment up front, and we never pressure you to sign on the spot.” It's the exact opposite of what homeowners fear.
Explain the insurance process step by step: free inspection with photos, the homeowner files the claim, the adjuster visits (you can be there), then the work. People search “roof insurance claim process” and “claim denied” because nobody explains it.
Never offer to cover or waive a deductible. Insurers treat it as fraud, and many states ban it outright. Saying so on your site builds trust.
Show local proof. Photos of roofs you've done in their town, reviews that name the neighborhood, and how many years you've been there.
“Roof replacement cost per square” is a real, common search. Most homeowners don't know what a square is. The roofer who explains it earns the call.
Explain “squares.” One square is 100 square feet of roof. A typical home's roof is bigger than its floor area because of the slope.
Show typical ranges by home size and material: asphalt, architectural shingles, metal. People search “new roof cost 2,000 sq ft.”
Explain what changes the price: pitch, layers to tear off, damaged decking, permits, and access.
Explain how insurance changes it. People search “roof replacement cost with insurance” and “depreciation.” A short explanation of deductibles and depreciation saves a dozen phone calls.
Offer financing, and say so. “Roof repair near me with financing” is a real search.
This one's our advice, not a study. Keep any prices on your site current, since material costs move.
Roofing demand follows the storms. Promote the right service before people need it, and be ready the day after a storm.

Get recommended by ChatGPT
Homeowners have started asking AI who to call, and whether insurance will pay for their roof. It's still early, which is exactly why it's worth getting ahead of.
45%of customers now ask ChatGPT or other AI tools to recommend local businesses, up from 6% a year earlierBrightLocal, 2026
82%of customers read the AI-written review summaries that sites like Google now showBrightLocal, 2026
Same name, address, and phone everywhere: Google, Yelp, Angi, Facebook, the BBB, your website. Mismatched details make it harder for Google and AI tools to be sure they have the right business.
Say what you do and where, in plain words. “We replace hail-damaged roofs in Plano, Frisco, and McKinney” beats “Quality roofing solutions.”
Answer common questions on your site (see above), especially how insurance claims work. AI tools lean on pages that answer questions clearly.
Reviews that mention the job. Google's AI review summaries are built from what customers write, so a review that says “helped with our hail claim in Frisco” says a lot.
Try it yourself. Ask ChatGPT “Who's a trustworthy roofer in {your town}?” and see who it names.
Roofing searches spike after every storm, and homeowners are more worried about scams than ever. Showing up first, looking trustworthy, is how you win them.

The problem
Why good roofers lose jobs online.
1Not found
Outranked when the storm hits
After hail or high winds, the whole town searches at once. Without a strong Google profile and pages for the work you do, those calls go to whoever ranks above you, including out-of-town crews.
2Not chosen
Mistaken for a storm chaser
Homeowners search “hail damage roof scam” for a reason. If your website doesn't show your license, insurance, local address, and real reviews, you look like every stranger knocking on doors.

Missing from AI answers
People ask ChatGPT whether insurance will cover their roof and who to call. If AI can't find clear, consistent information about you, it names someone else.

FAQ
Questions from roofers
Something else on your mind? Ask us on your free call.
Do you only work with roofers?
No. We work with home service businesses of all kinds, from plumbers and electricians to HVAC and landscaping companies. Roofing is a great fit, though: storm-driven demand, big-ticket jobs, and the need to stand out from storm chasers are exactly what our approach is built for.
Can you help me get more storm and insurance work?
Yes. We build pages for storm damage, hail and wind inspections, and how insurance claims work, so homeowners searching after a storm find you first and see you as the trustworthy local option.
Should I keep paying for lead sites like Angi or HomeAdvisor?
That's your call, and we'll look at the numbers with you. Leads from those sites are often shared with other roofers. Our goal is to build your own Google presence so more homeowners find and call you directly, which usually means relying less on bought leads over time.
What happens when everyone calls at once after a storm?
Your website chat answers questions and books inspection slots around the clock, so homeowners can grab a time even when your phone won't stop ringing. You decide which services and times are bookable.
How long until I get more calls?
Quick wins like profile fixes and review requests go live in your first week. Climbing the map for competitive searches like "roof repair near me" usually takes a few months, depending on your area and competition.
