The electrician's playbook

Seven things you can do this week to win more jobs from Google, whether or not you ever work with us. Every number links to where it came from.

01

Answer every call (or let something else)

The cheapest job you'll ever get is the one already calling you. Most home service businesses let a lot of them slip away.

  • Forward after three rings. When you're up a ladder or in an attic, the call should roll to the office, a family member, or an answering service, not voicemail.
  • Text back every missed call within a minute. Most business phone apps can do it automatically. It keeps the customer from dialing the next electrician on the list.
  • Let people book online after hours. A booking link or request form on your website catches the 9pm “half my outlets just died” search.
  • Ask for the job before you hang up. Use the script below, in your own words.
  • Running Google Local Services Ads? Google says missed calls can hurt your ad ranking there too.
Missed-call text
Hi, this is {Your Business}. Sorry we missed your call, we're on a job right now. Reply with what's going on and we'll call you back within 30 minutes. If you smell burning or see sparks, turn off the main breaker if it's safe to, and call 911 if there's smoke.
End-of-call script
I can have an electrician out there today between 1pm and 3pm. Want me to put you down for that? I'll just need your address and the best number to text you when we're on the way.

Set up your Google profile in 15 minutes

Your Google Business Profile is what shows up on Google Maps. Most electricians set it up once and never touch it again.

An electrician in a hard hat standing next to an electrical meter
  • Primary category: Electrician. Google says to pick the most specific category that fits. For almost every residential electrical company, that's Electrician.
  • Add a few more categories, only for work you really do. Common ones: Electrical installation service, Lighting contractor, Generator shop (if you sell or service generators). Google warns against adding a category for every service.
  • List your services one by one, with a sentence each: panel upgrades, EV charger installation, whole-home generators, lighting, troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Put your license number front and center, in your profile description and on every page of your website. Electrical work feels risky to homeowners, and many will look you up.
  • Real photos, added every month. Clean panel work, finished lighting, your van and your team. A tidy panel photo says more than any slogan.
  • Hours that match reality. People search “electrician open now” and “emergency electrician 24/7.” If you take emergency calls, say so.

Get more reviews, and reply to every one

Reviews decide who gets the call, and the bar keeps rising.

80%are likely to use a business that responds to all of its reviewsBrightLocal, 2026

  • Ask right after the job, while the lights are on and the customer is happy. A text with a direct link works best.
  • Make it one tap. In your Google profile, use “Ask for reviews” to get a short link straight to your review form.
  • Reply to every review within a week, good and bad. Most customers expect a reply within that time.
  • Reply like a person. Use their name, mention the job, and sign it. It shows the next customer what you're like to deal with.

I'm sorry, and you're right to expect the price we quoted. We found damaged wiring behind the panel and should have stopped and called you before going ahead. That's on us. Please call me directly at {your number} so I can make it right. – Dave, owner

Answer the questions homeowners Google

Before they call, homeowners search their problem. These are real Google searches from October 2026. Each one deserves a short answer on your website, on the page for that service.

Breakers and outlets

  • why does my breaker keep tripping with nothing plugged in
  • breaker keeps tripping when ac turns on
  • half my outlets stopped working
  • outlet not working after resetting breaker
  • gfci outlet won't reset

Warning signs

  • lights flickering in house
  • lights flickering when ac turns on
  • outlet not grounded
  • aluminum wiring in house
  • knob and tube wiring replacement cost

Upgrades

  • electrical panel upgrade cost
  • panel upgrade 200 amp
  • level 2 charger installation cost
  • whole house generator cost installed
  • surge protector whole house installation

Small jobs

  • electrician near me for small jobs
  • ceiling fan installation labor cost
  • recessed lighting installation cost
  • how much does an electrician charge per hour
Example answer you can adapt

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

A breaker trips to protect your home. Usually it's too many things running on one circuit, like a space heater and a microwave on the same line. Try unplugging a few things and resetting it once. If it trips again right away, trips with nothing plugged in, or feels hot or smells like burning, stop resetting it and give us a call. That points to a short or a failing breaker, and we can find it safely.

Put a short answer on the page, then a clear “Call us” or “Book online” button right under it. And if you're happy to take small jobs, say so: “electrician near me for small jobs” is a real, common search.

Win more panels, EV chargers, and generators

Repairs keep you busy. Upgrades grow the business. Homeowners research these for weeks, so your website has to do the selling before they ever call.

Endedthe federal tax credit for home EV chargers, for anything installed after June 30, 2026IRS
  • Give each upgrade its own page: panel upgrades, EV chargers, generators, surge protection. Each is its own search, so each needs its own answer.
  • Show “starting at” prices or a typical range, and explain what changes it: amperage, distance from the panel, permits.
  • Be the honest one about the EV credit. People still search “ev charger installation tax credit.” Tell them the federal credit ended June 30, 2026, and point them to utility or state rebates if there are any where you work.
  • Sell generators with the outage numbers. In storm-prone areas, hours without power are the whole pitch.
  • Explain permits and inspections. “We pull the permit and handle the inspection” is a reason to choose a licensed electrician over a handyman.

Hurricanes Beryl, Helene, and Milton caused 80% of 2024's outage hours, so the generator pitch is strongest where storms hit.

Get recommended by ChatGPT

Homeowners have started asking AI who to call. It's still early, which is exactly why it's worth getting ahead of.

45%use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% a year earlierBrightLocal, 2026
82%read the AI-written review summaries that now appear on GoogleBrightLocal, 2026
  • Same name, address, and phone everywhere: Google, Yelp, Angi, Facebook, your website. Mismatched details make it harder for Google and AI tools to be sure they have the right business.
  • Say what you do and where, in plain words. “We install Level 2 EV chargers in Plano, Frisco, and Allen” beats “Quality electrical solutions.”
  • Answer common questions on your site (see above). AI tools lean on pages that answer questions clearly.
  • Reviews that mention the job. Google's AI review summaries are built from what customers write, so a review that says “upgraded our panel to 200 amps in Frisco” says a lot.
  • Try it yourself. Ask ChatGPT “Who's the best electrician in {your town}?” and see who it names.

What customers search

The searches that bring electrical jobs

Electrical searches range from urgent fixes to big-ticket upgrades like panels and EV chargers. Showing up near the top for both keeps your crew busy.

  • electrician near me
  • emergency electrician
  • breaker keeps tripping
  • outlet not working
  • electrical panel upgrade
  • EV charger installation near me
  • generator installation near me
  • ceiling fan installation

The problem

Why good electricians lose jobs online.

1Not found

Lost among lead sites and franchises

Lead sites and national franchises crowd the search results. Without a strong Google profile and pages for the jobs you do, homeowners never see your shop.

2Not chosen

No proof you're licensed and trusted

Electrical work feels risky to homeowners. If your website doesn't show your license, insurance, and reviews up front, they pick someone whose does.

3Not recommended

Missing from AI answers

People ask ChatGPT who to trust for a panel upgrade or an EV charger install. If AI can't find clear, consistent information about you, it names a competitor.

FAQ

Questions from electricians

Something else on your mind? Ask us on your free call.

Do you only work with electricians?

No. We work with home service businesses of all kinds, from HVAC and roofing to remodeling and landscaping. Electrical contractors are a great fit, though: urgent repair searches, high-value upgrade jobs, and the need to look trustworthy are exactly what our approach is built for.

Can you help me get more panel upgrades and EV charger jobs?

Yes. We build your Google profile services and website pages around the jobs you want more of, so you show up for those searches, not just general repair calls.

Should I keep paying for lead sites like Angi or Thumbtack?

That's your call, and we'll look at the numbers with you. Leads from those sites are often shared with other electricians. Our goal is to build your own Google presence so more customers find and call you directly, which usually means relying less on bought leads over time.

Will my license and insurance show on my website?

Yes, if you'd like. Showing your license number, insurance, and reviews helps homeowners trust you before they call, which matters a lot for electrical work.

How long until I get more calls?

Quick wins like profile fixes and review requests go live in your first week. Climbing the map for competitive searches like "electrician near me" usually takes a few months, depending on your area and competition.
