Free The landscaper's playbook: 8 things to do this week

The landscaper's playbook

Eight things you can do this week to win more jobs from Google, whether or not you ever work with us. Every number links to where it came from.

01

Answer every call, and book the estimate

The cheapest job you'll ever get is the one already calling you. In spring, the landscaper who calls back first usually gets the yard for the whole season.

  • Plan for the spring rush. March and April bring a wave of calls at once. Line up someone to answer, or let people book estimates online.
  • Text back every missed call within a minute. Most business phone apps can do it automatically. Your crews are mowing, not answering phones.
  • Let people book estimates online. A booking link catches the Sunday-night “landscaping near me free estimates” search.
  • Ask for the job before you hang up. Use the script below, in your own words.
Missed-call text
Hi, this is {Your Business}. Sorry we missed your call, our crews are out on routes. Reply with your address and what you need, and we'll call you back today with a quote or a time to come look.
End-of-call script
We have a crew in your neighborhood on Thursdays. I can put you on the route starting this week, or come by for a free estimate Wednesday between 2pm and 4pm. Which works better?

02

Set up your Google profile in 15 minutes

Your Google Business Profile is what shows up on Google Maps. In a trade this crowded, a complete, active profile is how you stand out.

A suburban home with a lush lawn and landscaped flower beds
  • Primary category: Landscaper, or Lawn care service if mowing is most of your business. Google says to pick the most specific category that fits.
  • Add a few more categories, only for work you really do. Common ones: Landscape designer, Tree service, Lawn sprinkler system contractor, Snow removal service. Google warns against adding a category for every service.
  • List your services one by one, with a sentence each: weekly mowing, spring and fall cleanups, aeration and overseeding, mulch, patios, irrigation.
  • Before-and-after photos, every month. Nothing sells yard work like a yard. Post a few new photos every month, especially in spring.
  • A service area that matches your routes. List the towns you actually drive to.

03

Get more reviews, and reply to every one

Reviews decide who gets the call, and in landscaping they're how homeowners tell a reliable crew from a no-show.

80%of customers say they're likely to choose a business that replies to every reviewBrightLocal, 2026
50%of customers are less likely to choose a business that posts generic, copy-paste repliesBrightLocal, 2026
  • Ask after a visible win, like the first cut of the season or a finished cleanup. A text with a photo and a direct link works best.
  • Make it one tap. In your Google profile, use “Ask for reviews” to get a short link straight to your review form.
  • Ask recurring customers too, not just one-time jobs. “They've shown up every Thursday for two years” is the review that wins the next customer.
  • Reply to every review within a week, good and bad, in your own words, and sign it.

Answer the questions homeowners Google

Before they call, homeowners search their problem. These are real Google searches from October 2026. Each one deserves a short answer on your website, on the page for that service.

Lawn problems

  • brown spots in lawn from dogs
  • brown spots in lawn fungus
  • why is my grass turning yellow
  • why is my grass growing mushrooms
  • why is my grass dying in patches

  • lawn aeration and overseeding
  • fall cleanup near me
  • sprinkler repair near me

Projects

  • paver patio cost per square foot
  • paver patio cost vs concrete
  • sod installation cost per square foot
  • artificial turf cost
  • xeriscape front yard

Pricing

  • how much does lawn care cost per month
  • how much does lawn care cost for a small yard
  • landscaping cost per square foot
  • yard cleanup cost
Example answer you can adapt

Why does my lawn have brown spots?

The most common causes are dog urine, grubs eating the roots, lawn fungus, and dry spots where sprinklers don't reach. A quick test: tug on the brown grass. If it lifts up like a loose carpet, it's probably grubs. If it's mainly where the dog goes, it's urine. If the spots spread in rings after warm, wet weather, it's likely fungus. Each has a different fix, so send us a photo or book a free lawn check and we'll tell you which one it is.

05

Sell plans, not one-time jobs

A one-time cleanup is one invoice. A weekly or seasonal plan is a customer for years. Homeowners already shop this way: “how much does lawn care cost per month” is a real, common search.

  • Show a clear monthly price, or a “starting at” price by yard size, with exactly what's included. People who can see the price can sign up without a phone call.
  • Let people sign up online for weekly mowing or a seasonal program, and book the next season before this one ends.
  • Use the home-value angle. Realtors estimate a standard lawn care program recovers more than twice its cost when the home sells. That's a reason to keep paying, not just a nice yard.
  • Serve seniors on purpose. “Lawn mowing services for seniors” and “yard cleanup for seniors” are real, common searches. A page for them, with reliable scheduling and easy billing, is a quiet goldmine.
  • Add water to the plan. EPA says outdoor use can reach 70% of a home's water in summer. Sprinkler checks, start-ups, and winterizing are easy add-ons that save customers money.

Win bigger projects with curb appeal

Patios, full yard makeovers, and lighting are your biggest tickets. Homeowners who are about to sell, and the Realtors advising them, are some of your best customers.

  • Make a “getting ready to sell” page. A quick package of cleanup, mulch, fresh plantings, and edging, priced and bookable. Realtors will send their sellers to it.
  • Introduce yourself to local Realtors. 92% of them already tell sellers to fix curb appeal. Be the name they hand out.
  • Show project prices by square foot. People search “paver patio cost per square foot” and “paver patio cost vs concrete.” A simple comparison wins the estimate.
  • Post finished projects with before-and-after photos on your site and your Google profile. A patio photo sells the next patio.

Plan your year around the seasons

Landscaping is the most seasonal trade there is. Promote the next season before it starts.

Jan–FebNext season's plans, early-bird pricing, snow removal (cold areas)Lock in routes before the rush
March–AprilSpring cleanups, first mow, mulch, sprinkler start-upsThe busiest booking weeks of the year
May–JunePatios, plantings, landscape lightingHomeowners want the yard ready for summer
July–AugustWatering advice, irrigation checks, lawn repairHeat and drought stress lawns, and water bills peak
September–OctoberAeration and overseeding, fall cleanupsBest time to repair cool-season lawns (most of the northern US)
NovemberLeaf removal, sprinkler winterizing, holiday lightsClose out the season and keep crews busy

Adjust for your climate: Phoenix and Florida landscapers work year-round, Minnesota landscapers plow snow in winter.

Get recommended by ChatGPT

Homeowners have started asking AI for a reliable lawn service or a patio contractor nearby. It's still early, which is exactly why it's worth getting ahead of.

45%of customers now ask ChatGPT or other AI tools to recommend local businesses, up from 6% a year earlierBrightLocal, 2026
82%of customers read the AI-written review summaries that sites like Google now showBrightLocal, 2026
  • Same name, address, and phone everywhere: Google, Yelp, Nextdoor, Facebook, your website. Mismatched details make it harder for Google and AI tools to be sure they have the right business.
  • Say what you do and where, in plain words. “Weekly mowing and paver patios in Plano, Frisco, and Allen” beats “Quality outdoor living solutions.”
  • Answer common questions on your site (see above). AI tools lean on pages that answer questions clearly.
  • Reviews that mention the job. Google's AI review summaries are built from what customers write, so a review that says “built our patio in Frisco” says a lot.
  • Try it yourself. Ask ChatGPT “Who's the best lawn care company in {your town}?” and see who it names.

What customers search

The searches that bring landscaping jobs

Landscaping searches run from weekly mowing to big backyard projects. Showing up near the top for both fills your routes and your project calendar.

  • lawn care near me prices
  • lawn mowing service near me
  • landscaping near me free estimates
  • spring cleanup near me
  • lawn aeration and overseeding
  • paver patio cost per square foot

The problem

Why good landscapers lose jobs online.

1Not found

Lost in a crowded field

There are more landscaping companies than almost any other home service. Without a strong Google profile and pages for the services you offer, homeowners never see you.

2Not chosen

Estimates that never get booked

In spring the phone rings while you're out on routes. If nobody calls back and your website can't book an estimate, the homeowner goes with whoever answered first.

3Not recommended

Missing from AI answers

People ask ChatGPT for a reliable lawn service or a patio installer nearby. If AI can't find clear, consistent information about you, it names someone else.

FAQ

Questions from landscapers

Something else on your mind? Ask us on your free call.

Do you only work with landscapers?

No. We work with home service businesses of all kinds, from plumbers and electricians to HVAC and roofing companies. Landscaping is a great fit, though: seasonal demand, recurring service, and big backyard projects are exactly what our approach is built for.

Can you help me get more recurring customers, not just one-time jobs?

Yes. We build your website around your plans, with clear monthly pricing and online sign-up, so homeowners can choose weekly mowing or a seasonal program without a phone call.

Should I keep paying for lead sites like Angi, Thumbtack, or Yelp ads?

That's your call, and we'll look at the numbers with you. Leads from those sites are often shared with other landscapers. Our goal is to build your own Google presence so more homeowners find and call you directly, which usually means relying less on bought leads over time.

What about the spring rush, when everyone calls at once?

Your website chat answers questions and books estimates around the clock, so homeowners can grab a time even when your crews are out and nobody can pick up. You decide which services and times are bookable.

How long until I get more calls?

Quick wins like profile fixes and review requests go live in your first week. Climbing the map for competitive searches like "lawn care near me" usually takes a few months, depending on your area and competition.
